Oversold Signal For Purpose Total Return Bond Fund ETF PBD As RSI Dips Below 30

Legendary investor Warren Buffett advises investors to be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. One way to gauge whether fear has become excessive in a particular security is through a technical analysis indicator called the Relative Strength Index, or RSI, which measures momentum on a scale of zero to 100. A security is generally considered to be oversold if the RSI reading falls below 30, and overbought if it rises above 70.
In trading on Monday, shares of Purpose Total Return Bond Fund ETF (PBD.CA) entered into oversold territory, hitting an RSI reading of 29.8, after changing hands as low as $16.12 per share. By comparison, the current RSI reading of the S&P/TSX Composite Index is 42.0, suggesting that selling pressure in PBD.CA has been materially more pronounced than in the broader Canadian equity benchmark.
From a technical perspective, an RSI reading below 30 does not guarantee that a price bottom has been reached, but it often signals that recent downside momentum may be stretched in the short term. A bullish investor could look at PBD.CA's 29.8 RSI reading as a sign that the recent heavy selling may be in the process of exhausting itself, and could begin to monitor the units for potential entry-point opportunities on the buy side. Traders will often look for confirmation signals such as a rebound in RSI back above the 30 level, a stabilization in price, or an improvement in broader credit and interest-rate conditions before committing new capital.
Purpose Total Return Bond Fund ETF is a fixed income vehicle listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange that seeks to provide investors with a diversified portfolio of primarily investment-grade bonds and other income-generating securities. As with most bond-focused funds, its market price can be influenced by movements in interest rates, credit spreads, and expectations for central bank policy. Rising yields typically put downward pressure on bond prices and bond funds, while declining yields can provide a tailwind.
The chart below shows the one year performance of PBD.CA units, illustrating how the ETF has traded within a relatively narrow band over the past 12 months while still exhibiting periods of heightened volatility as interest-rate expectations have shifted:
Looking at the chart above, PBD.CA's low point in its 52-week range is $16.04 per share, with $16.84 as the 52-week high point—that compares with a last trade of $16.12. This places the ETF near the bottom of its trailing one-year range, consistent with the oversold RSI reading. Income-oriented investors may view such levels as a potential opportunity to accumulate units at a discount to where the fund has traded for much of the past year, though continued volatility in rates could still pressure prices.
As with any ETF or security, investors should complement technical indicators such as RSI with a broader review of fundamentals, including the fund's underlying holdings, duration profile, credit quality, distribution yield, and management fees, as well as their own risk tolerance and investment horizon.
